The Poodle is a formal breed of dogs with many coat colors. There are 4 recog- nized sizes from this breed according to FCI (Federation Cynologique Interna- tionale). They are the Standard Poodle, Medium poodle, toy Poodle and the Minia- ture Poodle. Having bred as a water dog in Germany, poodles were standardized in France. They are known to have shown their skills in tracking, dog sports, agility, obedience and herding. This explains how they were able to claim top honors in so many conformation shows. In 1966 and 1982, the “Best in Show” was won by the Toy Poodles apart from Standard Poodles winning several awards in different years. The Poodles are well proportioned, intelligent, active and an elegant dog. They were used in the military as working dogs since 17th century at least. Poodles were established as the national breed in France due to its popularity. They have dark oval eyes and an intelligent expression on their face. Poodles have single layered coats with no undercoat which is dense and curly with less shedding. When poo- dles shed, it becomes tangled with surrounding hair without coming off. They can be groomed easily with proper equipment at home. But professional grooming is quite expensive. Similar to human dreadlocks, poodle hair could be “corded”. But lately, corded poodles have become a rare sight. Clipping is a requirement if the poodle is to con- test in dog shows. The coat of a poodle is parti-colored. If the markings resemble a tuxedo, it is called a “tuxedo” poodle. Poodles are known to be highly energetic and mischievous. They get bored easily though. Did you know that the oldest poodle was a dog named “Lady” which lived 28 years and 218 days
